Arabic Musicality workshop with
Majda Anwar
About Majda Anwar

Majda is a dancer and musician of the Middle Eastern arts. As a
dancer, Majda began dancing at the age of 5 with her Jordanian
family at social gatherings, learning from her aunts. At the age of
11, she began her formal dance training and continues her studies
today. As a musician, Majda picked up the violin at age 10 and
played in school orchestras through high school. In the fall of 2008,
Majda returned to the violin to study Arabic music with Dr. Wael
Mahalowy at the American University of Cairo during study abroad.
She has since studied with various Arab musicians around the US,
always searching to improve her sound and understanding of
maqamat (Arabic music modes). Majda’s continued passion and
dedication to the Middle Eastern arts have led her to teach and
perform as often as possible. From 2006 – 2012, Majda performed
and toured with the Awalim Dance Company under the direction of
Ziah Ali. From 2005 – 2009, Majda has taught multi-level, weekly
classes at Georgia Tech where she earned her Undergraduate
degree in Marketing at the School of Business and she currently
teaches the Tribal Bellydance Center of Atlanta. In 2015, Majda
began to study with the Salimpour School of Dance and holds both
a Level 2 Suhaila and Jamila Salimpour certification.

About the workshop
Arabic Musicality for Bellydance

Get ready to get your belly dance nerd on! In this 4 hour workshop, Majda Anwar
will cover tips and techniques to help dancers connect more intricately with Arabic
music. As both a dancer and musician, Majda has a unique approach to musicality
and can “speak both languages”. For the first 2 hours of the workshop, dancers
will be introduced to Majda’s unique Arabic dance style through a series of
combinations used to help explore how to interpret music. After a lunch break, get
ready to get your thinking caps on! We will explore the basic elements of music
and how to apply belly dance technique to musical interpretation. Majda will lead a
series of guided interpretation sessions to famous belly dance tunes to help
dancers create their own toolbox for improvisational performance. Dancers are
asked to bring finger cymbals, notebook, water bottle and a small towel.
